When customers come into our Lethbridge showroom and tell us they want European-style cabinets, about half the time what they’re looking for is a specific style: flat doors, minimal design, clean lines.
But there’s a lot more to European cabinetry than the look. European-style cabinets are defined by how they’re constructed, and that construction affects everything from the amount of usable space inside the cabinet to how the cabinets come together across a wall. The clean, modern look is just one of the many styles that can be built using this approach.
To help you decide if European-Style cabinets from Cabinet Nook are right for you, we’ve put together a rundown of what actually sets them apart, and why they’re a great choice for homeowners and builders who are looking for quality construction and more usable space.
Frameless Cabinet Construction: What Makes It Different?
Traditional North American cabinets are built with something called a “face frame”, which is a hardwood frame roughly an inch and a half wide attached to the front of the box. It adds rigidity and gives the door something to mount to. It also narrows the opening.
European cabinets skip this face frame entirely. The door mounts directly to the side of the box, and the exposed panel edges are covered with edge banding. This is why European style cabinets are also called frameless or full access cabinets, and why the interior of the cabinet is the same width as the cabinet itself.

How Frameless Cabinets Give You More Usable Space
Without a face frame taking up space around the cabinet opening, you get more usable room inside the same-size cabinet. Drawers can be wider, shelves can make better use of the available depth, and it’s easier to access everything inside.
You’ll notice the difference especially in base cabinets. With traditional face-frame cabinets, a centre stile can sit between two doors and get in the way when you’re reaching into the cabinet. Frameless cabinets have no centre stile, so the full opening is available. That extra access makes a noticeable difference in everyday use, especially when you’re working with a smaller kitchen.
What Is the 32mm System in European Cabinetry?
European cabinets are built on a 32mm system, meaning the mounting holes are drilled in a repeating pattern 32 millimetres apart. It sounds like a small manufacturing detail, but it’s actually the reason the whole approach works.
That standard grid is what lets shelves, hinges, and drawer slides mount anywhere with predictable spacing. It’s also why the gaps between doors stay even across a long run of cabinetry. That level of consistency helps give the finished kitchen its clean, balanced appearance. It becomes especially noticeable in larger kitchens, where even small variations can really stand out across a long wall of cabinetry.
Cabinet Hardware: Concealed Hinges and Soft-Close Features
Without a face frame, the hinge mounts directly to the cabinet box, so the hardware needs to provide a precise fit. European cabinets use concealed hinges that can be adjusted in several directions after installation. If a door needs a small adjustment, the alignment can easily be corrected with a screwdriver right at the hinge without having to modify the cabinet itself.
Soft-close doors and drawers are also standard on most of what we sell rather than an upgrade. The doors and drawers slow down as they close, so they shut smoothly and quietly instead of being slammed. It’s a small detail, but one you notice every time you use the kitchen, and many of our customers tell us they wouldn’t want to go back to cabinets without it.
Do European-Style Cabinets Have to Look Modern?
While European-style cabinets can be modern, but they don’t have to be. Frameless cabinet construction works just as well behind a shaker door in a warm oak as it does behind a flat slab in matte white. You can have the space and accessibility of frameless cabinets while choosing a door style and finish that feels right for your home.
Our Lethbridge showroom has European-style cabinetry in traditional, transitional, and modern designs, with options ranging from classic shaker cabinets and warm wood finishes to clean, contemporary styles. The construction stays consistent while the finished look can be completely different. Click here to learn more about the styles and finishes we offer!

Why We Choose Montalco for European-Style Cabinets
We source our custom and semi-custom frameless cabinets through Montalco because their manufacturing gives us the precision we’re looking for without pushing the price of the finished cabinet out of reach. Their approach to frameless construction allows us to offer the quality and flexibility of European-style cabinetry at a price that makes sense for our customers.
That’s important to us because European-quality construction shouldn’t have to mean a premium price. Montalco allows us to offer frameless cabinetry to homeowners and builders throughout southern Alberta and into British Columbia while keeping the focus on quality, function, and value.
Are Frameless Cabinets Right for Every Home?
Frameless cabinets can be a great fit for many kitchens, but the installation needs to be done carefully. That’s especially worth considering in older Lethbridge homes, where walls and floors aren’t always perfectly square. Proper scribing and filler work can account for those variations, but precise installation is important to getting the clean, even look that frameless cabinetry is known for.
There are also projects where a different type of cabinet construction makes more sense. If you’re looking for heavily detailed doors, intricate millwork, or a fully custom cabinet design, our sister company, Hiebert Cabinets, may be the better fit. We’d rather point you toward the right option for your project than try to make one cabinet system work for everyone.
If you’re planning a new kitchen or cabinet project and aren’t sure which option is right for you, get in touch with our team. We’re happy to talk through your project and help you find the best fit.
See European-Style Cabinets in Person
Photos can show you how a cabinet looks, but they can’t tell you much about how it feels to use. Open a drawer, run your hand along an edge-banded panel, or close a soft-close door and you’ll get a much better sense of the construction and quality.
Our showroom is at 3032 36th St. N in Lethbridge, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 5:00, with evenings and weekends by appointment. Bring your measurements and your questions, and feel the difference for yourself. Our team will be happy to walk you through your options!
